Adelphi Softball Splits With Merrimack, 1-0, 4-5

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi Panthers held Merrimack scoreless in game one, but fell short in a late seventh inning surge to drop game two in a non-conference doubleheader, 1-0, 4-5, on Sunday afternoon. Adelphi moves to 16-9 on the season, while Merrimack is now 6-5 overall.

Game One-Senior Katie Omilak (Royersford, Pa.) pitched a two-hitter with one walk and two strikeouts to improve to 4-3 on the mound. The Panthers picked up the only run of the game in the second inning. Senior Kristine McCarthy (Bellerose Terrace, N.Y.) hit a triple then scored on a single RBI from sophomore Tonia Trapani (Concord, Calif.), who was 2-3 in the game. Merrimack pitcher Meghan Condon (Middleboro, MA) allowed five hits, one run, one earned run, with one walk and six strikeouts.

Adelphi had one run on five hits and no errors, while Merrimack had no runs on two hits and two errors.

Game Two-The Warriors came out strong in the second game, surging to a 5-0 lead early on. Merrimack picked up three of its five runs in the second inning after a double by freshman Jacqueline Rubino (Wilmington, MA) brought in sophomore Gina Bertelli (Wilbraham, MA). Sophomore Emily Cutler (Acton, MA) hit a single with the bases loaded, collecting two RBI.

The Panthers came alive in the sixth inning as senior Cheri Pearce (Orange, Conn.), singled to first base. Back-to-back doubles by sophomore Ashley Spreer and Trapani, accounted for two runs as Adelphi trailed, 5-2. The Panthers made a run for the lead in the bottom of the seventh as sophomore Ivy Klein (Suffern, N.Y.) and Omilak each singled and then advanced on a passed ball. Klein scored on a throw after sophomore Theresa Kotulak (Clifton, N.J.) grounded out to the pitcher. Pearce, who was 3-4 in the game, singled for the RBI as Omilak scored what would be the final run for the Panthers.

Freshman pitcher Carla Buonviaggio (Staten Island, N.Y.) picked up the loss for the Panthers, throwing six innings, allowing 13 hits, five runs, four earned runs and struck out two. Buonviaggio falls to 4-2 on the season.

Adelphi had five runs on 10 hits and three errors, while Merrimack had five runs on 14 hits and no errors.

Adelphi returns to conference play this Wednesday, April 9, traveling to NYIT at 3:00 p.m.
