Adelphi University outlasted Molloy College, 15-13, 9-5, in a conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon in Rockville Centre. Sophomore Ashley Spreer combined for 4-5 along with two homeruns and a triple to lead the Panthers, who improve to 15-9 overall and 3-5 in the NYCAC. The Lions fall to 9-11; 2-6 in the NYCAC.
Game One- Adelphi held off a late Molloy rally in the bottom of the seventh to take the first game in nine innings. The Panthers blasted to a 9-0 lead through the top of the fifth, thanks to a homerun from Spreer in the first inning for three of her four RBI in the game. Freshman Beth Fletcher singled to bring in sophomore Tonia Trapani who reached on an error before stealing second. Spreer notched her second home run in the third inning to open the Panther lead, 6-0. A single by Katie Schreiber brought home Melissa McCarthy to put Molloy on board in the third. The Panthers held a 12-7 lead, when Molloy rallied back with four hits and five runs to tie the game 12-12 in the seventh. After a scoreless eighth inning, Trapani got home on a fielder's choice and senior Katie Omilak singled with runners on second and third for two RBI, as Adelphi held on for the win.
Game Two-Adelphi again jumped out to an early lead as three different players collected home runs in the game. Senior Cheri Pearce got the Panthers on board with a homer in the first inning. Freshman pitcher Carla Buonviaggio held the Lions to just two hits in the first five innings. Senior Kristine McCarthy, 2-4 with three RBI, knocked out the second home run in the six inning, as Adelphi led 6-0. Trailing 7-0 going into the bottom of the sixth, the Lions gave the Panthers a scare as they collected four runs, on two hits and one error. Freshman Amy Delmore recorded the final homerun of the day for two RBI to seal the Panther win, 9-5. Buonviaggo improves to 4-1 on the mound, allowing four hits, with five runs, three walks and six strikeouts.
There is no rest for Adelphi, who returns to action on Sunday, April 6, hosting Merrimack in a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 12:00 p.m.
