The Adelphi softball team swept New Haven in a conference doubleheader in its final home game of the regular season. Senior Katie Omilak pitched a one-hitter for the 3-0 shutout in game one. The Panthers jumped out to an early 6-0 lead to cruise to a 8-1 win in game two. Adelphi improves to 29-13 overall and 16-6 in the NYCAC. The Chargers drop to 22-19-1 and 18-4 in the conference.
Game One-After a quiet first inning, Adelphi picked up two runs in the second inning. A double by sophomore Tonia Trapani advanced sophomore Ashley Spreer to third after she reached on a fielder's choice. Sophomore Tara Rice singled to left field, scoring Spreer. Trapani advanced to third before scoring on an error by the catcher on the next play. Spreer followed up with a RBI in the third inning as the Panthers held the Chargers scoreless for the win.
Adelphi had three runs on three hits with two errors. New Haven had no runs on one hit and one error.
Game Two-A double by senior Cheri Pearce scored Omilak who reached second on a walk and a sacrifice by junior Jaime Pietrantoni. Spreer followed up with a double as well, bringing in Pearce. With two runners on, Trapani belted a double for two RBI as the Panthers jumped out to a 4-0 lead at in the first inning. Adelphi scored two more runs in the second inning before the Chargers would get on board at the top of the fourth. Diana York doubled to left field and Jennifer Ferranti followed with a double for the RBI. Pearce, who led Adelphi offensively going 3-4 with three RBI, accounted for the final two runs with a triple to right field.
Pietrantoni pitched six innings for the win, allowing six hits, one run, one earned, walked three and struckout three. Junior Katie Terris threw the final inning, allowing one hit.
Adelphi had eight runs on 12 hits with one error. New Haven had one run on seven hits with one error.
Prior to the start of today's game Adelphi recognized its six graduating seniors, Lisa Ferranti, Bonnie MacConnell, Kristine McCarthy, Cheri Pearce, Katie Omilak and Kylee Wilson, who played their last home game at Campus Field.
Adelphi is back in action tomorrow, with a conference road game at Bridgeport. Game time is 3:00 p.m.
