Panthers Drop a Double Header Against Philadelphia

April 21, 2003

Game 1 Box Score| Game 2 Box Score

The Adelphi Panthers dropped a pair of games against the University of Philadelphia on Saturday, April 21 by a score of 11-6 in the first game, and 11-6 in the second game. The Panthers may have been experiencing some "bus lag" from the 5 1/2 hour bus ride from Long Island to Philadelphia that was supposed to be a maximum of 2 1/2 hours.

The Panthers went on to make seven errors in the game, which made starter Mike Thompson throw more and more pitches than he had to. Thompson pitched 7.0 innings surrendering 11 hits, and 11 runs only which one run was earned. Adam Kipling came in relief in the eighth, to finish out the game. The Panthers could never seem to get the bats going as Philadelphia hurler Tom Demarco went the distance striking out nine.

On a bright note, Sophomore Matt DeWitt went 3-4 in the game with an RBI.

In the second game, the Panthers had a 4-3 lead going into the fifth until the Rams pulled away winning the game 11-6. With the score tied in the top of the sixth, freshman Thomas Cali (3-5 on the day) made the turn around third base and attempted to score on a base hit to right field. Tempers flared after right fielder Tom Demarco's throw came up the third base line, and Cali and the Philadelphia catcher. Words were exchaned which sparked the benches to clear. The teams met at home plate, no punches were landed, and no ejections were handed out.

Sophomore Chris Zinkiewicz took the loss. He pitched 7.0 innings giving up 13 hits, seven runs, four earned. Adam Kipling came in and pitched 1.0 innings allowing five hits, and four runs, all earned. Ricky Nicholson went 3-5 on the day, and Matt DeWitt went 2-4. DeWitt went a combined 5-8 on the day two RBI's.
