Adelphi Softball Drops Two Against Queens

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University softball team suffered a tough conference loss to visiting Queens College, 3-1, 4-3, Tuesday afternoon. The Panthers drop to 20-12 overall and 7-5 in the NYCAC. The Knights extend their win streak to 11 games, improving to 19-8; 14-2 in the NYCAC.

Game One--The Knights surged to an early lead, picking up three runs in the second inning off of three Adelphi errors. Freshman pitcher Victoria Forsythe pitched a perfect game through the sixth inning before allowing a walk from freshman Amy Delmore. Adelphi got on base in the seventh inning when senior Lisa Ferranti pinch hit for junior Jamie Pietrantoni and advanced to first on a walk. Pietrantoni advanced to second on a passed ball and to third after senior Cheri Pearce grounded out to first base. Senior Kristine McCarthy singled to left field for the RBI, scoring Pietrantoni, 3-1.

Pietrantoni took the loss, with four hits, three runs, one earned, one walk and no strikouts. Forsythe allowed one hit, one run, one earned, two walks and five strikeouts.

Adelphi had one run, on one hit with four errors. Queens had three runs, on four hits with no errors.

Game Two--Queen's Cheryl Consezo notched a two run homer to start the second game, but Adelphi responded with two runs of its own. Pietrantoni walked, advanced to second on a single by Pearce, then reached home on an error. Sophomore Ashley Spreer picked up the RBI on a single which brought in Pearce. The Knights pulled ahead in the third inning, 4-2. In the bottom of the fifth, Pearce scored on an error to close to within one, 4-3. Both teams remained scoreless throught the final four innings as Queens held on for the win.

Adelphi had three runs, on six hits and one error. Queens had four runs, on six hits with two errors.

Adelphi kicks off its first of four-straight road games this Thursday, April 17,traveling to Southampton College. Game time is 3:00 p.m.
