The Adelphi University softball team improved its overall record to 18-10 and 7-3 in the NYCAC after defeating Mercy College 10-0, 12-3 yesterday afternoon. Junior Jamie Pietrantoni pitched a no hitter in game one, walking two and striking out five.
Senior Kristine McCarthy led the Panthers offensively in game one, going 2-for-2 with two runs and an RBI. Sophomore Tara Rice was 1-3 with two RBI. Adelphi had 10 runs on six hits with one error. Mercy had no runs, no hits and two errors.
In game two, the Panthers surged to a 8-0 lead in the second inning. McCarthy again led Adelphi going 3-3 with two doubles for three RBI in the game. Rice, along with sophomores Ivy Klein and Theresa Kotulak each went 2-2. The Lady Flyers picked up their first run in the fourth, as Jacqui Huffman belted a homerun. Mercy would collect two more runs as Adelphi held on for the win, 12-3. Katie Terris pitched five innings for Adelphi, allowing seven hits, three runs, three earned, walking two and striking out two.
Adelphi had 12 runs on 12 hits with one error. Mercy had three runs on seven hits with one error.
The Panthers, currently ranked fourth in the Northeast Region, return to conference action on Saturday, hosting Philadelphia University at 12:00 p.m.
