The Adelphi men's lacrosse team dropped a tough 14-13 overtime decision in their season opener against St. Michael's College, Sunday afternoon at Kings Point Academy. Freshman Wesley Green collected six goals and two assists for the Panthers who fall to 0-1. St. Michael's improves to 1-0.
Trailing 0-2 at the top of the first quarter, Green collected back-to-back goals to tie the game, 2-2. Freshman Matt Bartolillo picked up one of his two goals on an assist from Green as the Panthers took the lead. Senior Tyler Heavenor collected two of his three goals and Green closed out the first quarter, with Adelphi leading 7-3.
Adelphi quickly picked up three goals in the second quarter, capped by a goal by senior Matt McGeehan from junior Jesse Sorensen at 11:20. The Purple Knights had the last two goals to cut the Panther lead to 10-6, going into intermission.
Marred by turnovers, the Panthers struggled in the third quarter, with Green scoring his fifth goal of the game at 3:26. The Purple Knights would answer with less than a minute remaining, 11-7.
St. Michael's exploded in the fourth quarter, taking advantage of two man-up opportunities, to go on a 4-2 run to close to within one with less than a minute left in regulation. A Panther turnover with eight seconds on the clock gave St. Michael's possession, which Justin Audet converted from forty yards out to tie the game, 13-13 with 1.2 seconds on the clock. St. Michael's captured the win at 1:01 in overtime.
Goalie Timothy Kraemer had four saves and St. Michael's Brian Hingston had 14 stops.
Adelphi is back in action next Saturday, hosting LeMoyne College at 1:00 p.m.
