The Adelphi women's lacrosse team suffered its first loss of the 2003 season, with a 8-6 loss to No.8 ranked Stonehill College, Sunday afternoon at Stiles Field. In a closely held contest, junior Leigh Fennessey led Adelphi with three goals and one assist. The Panthers drop to 3-1 on the season, while the Chieftans improve to 4-2.
Stonehill senior Katie Lambert dominated the first half, collecting three of her game-high five goals to give the Chieftans a 3-2 lead going into the intermission. The game tied twice in the first half, with Katherine Hock picking up the first Panther goal on an assist by senior Catherine Perez. Hock quickly followed up with an assist to Fennessey with nine minutes remaining to tie it again at 2-2. Lambert answered with the final goal of the half with 5:38 remaining on the clock.
In the second half, Stonehill opened up its lead to 4-2 with an unassisted goal by senior Melissa Gross. Fennessey rattled off the next two goals, followed by a free position goal from freshman Dawn Anselmin as the Panthers took their first lead of the contest, 5-4. The game remained close and with the scored tied for the fourth time at 6-6, Stonehill took the lead on goal from sophomore Colby Confer. Gross notched the game-winner with 22 seconds remaining as the Chieftans captured their fourth straight win, 8-6.
Adelphi's Josephine Coiro had nine saves, while Stonehill's Carissa Medeiros also had nine.
In a evenly matched contest, both teams entered today's match-up boasting three straight victories. Stonehill improves its all-time record against Adelphi to 2-0. In 2002, the Chieftans topped the Panthers 9-6.
The Panthers are back in action this Thursday, April 3, hosting East Stroudsburg University at 4:00 p.m.
