Softball Splits With Dowling; 3-1, 4-8

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi softball team suffered its first loss in six games after splitting its conference doubleheader with Dowling College, 3-1, 4-8, this afternoon at Adelphi. The Panthers move to 13-7 overall and 3-1 in the NYCAC, while the Golden Lions are now 6-14 overall and 3-7 in the conference.

Game one - Adelphi picked up two runs in the second inning. Tonia Trapani doubled then advanced to third on a single by Tara Rice. Jaime Pietrantoni picked up the RBI bringing Trapani home. Rice advanced to third on an error before a sacrifice fly by Katie Omilak giving the Panthers their second run. Dowling collected one run in the seventh inning, preventing the shutout, as the Panthers held on for the win. Freshman Carla Buonviaggio was the winning pitcher, with seven hits, one run (earned), one ball and four strikeouts.

The Panthers had three runs, on five hits and no errors. Dowling had one run on seven hits and three errors.

Game two -The Golden Lions came out strong, leading 4-0 at the top of the sixth inning. The Panthers got on board in the six inning as Jaime Pietrantoni reached first on an error, then advanced on a passed ball. Ashley Spreer's single, to right field brought in Pietrantoni as the Panthers trailed, 4-1. Dowling surged ahead, collecing four runs in the seventh, 8-1. Adelphi rallied back, taking advantage of two Dowling errors and an RBI from Katie Terris to pick up three runs. It was not enough for the win, as Dowling captured game two, 8-4.

Adelphi had four runs on six hits with two errors. Dowling had eight runs on six hits with four errors.

The Panthers are back in action tomorrow, traveling to Old Westbury, N.Y. to face C.W. Post. The game is scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m., weather permitting.
