Game 1 Box Score | Game 2 Box Score
Smithfield, R.I. -
Sophomore Adam Kipling (Smithtown, N.Y.) walloped a home run and went 3-for-5 on the day as the Adelphi baseball team (3-14) split a doubleheader against Bryant College (8-8-1), winning 8-5 in the first game, and falling 13-4 in the second, this afternoon at the Bryant Baseball Complex.
The Bulldogs scored a run in each of the first two innings of game one, but were answered in the top of the third as Panther junior Chris Alvarez (Waccabuc, N.Y.) hit his first home run of the season, a two-run shot beyond leftfield. It would remain tied untilfreshman Paul Novakowski (Prospect, Conn.) roped a two-run triple to right-center giving the Bulldogs a brief 4-2 lead at the end of the fifth.
Adelphi answered again, this time with four runs in the top of the sixth. An RBI-single chased Bryant starter Chris Bowser (Danvers, Mass.) to the showers (5+IP, 8H, 5R, 0BB, 6K), and brought in reliever Paul Gately (Cambridge, Mass.). Gately inherited runners on the corners with no outs, and promptly hit the first batter he faced to load the bases. The senior then induced a sac fly to centerfield, that tied the game at 4-4, but could not get the next out as freshman Thomas Cali (Shirley, N.Y.) doubled to centerfield plating two more, and capping a rally that made it 6-4 through the middle of the sixth.
Junior B.J. Gagnon (Rochester, N.H.), went hitless in the game (0-for-4), but notched an RBI-ground out in the bottom half of the inning to cut it to 6-5 at the end of six, but it was not enough as the Bulldogs went hitless in the seventh, handing Adelphi starter Andrew Tinucci (Bellmore, N.Y.) his first win of the season (1-3, 7IP, 8H, 5R, 3BB, 4K), and the Panthers their third win overall.
In the second game, Adelphi plated two in the top of the first, but the Bulldogs answered in their half with a lead-off single from Chris Dwyer (Stony Point, N.Y.), followed by an RBI-triple from Mickey Ryan (Lowell, Mass.). The freshman centerfielder then scored on a balk, tying the game 2-2, where it would remain until the third.
Bryant added to its total with a five-run third, highlighted by a pair of two-run singles from senior Mike Ciallella (Franklin, Mass.) and freshman Nick Turcarella (Salem, N.H.), and capped by a solo home run to right-centerfield by Grace that put the game away. Sophomore Stephen Sloan (Franklin, Mass.) pitched a perfect sixth and seventh innings retiring all six batters he faced to end it.
Adelphi returns to action Saturday, March 29, traveling to Mercy College for a conference doubleheader with the first pitch scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
