March 21, 2003

Box Score

Smithfield, R.I. - Sophomore attack Katherine Hock (Mineola, N.Y.) scored four goals and had two assists, while two other Adelphi players had hat tricks as the Panthers took a 16-5 win against Bryant Friday afternoon at Bulldog Stadium.

Adelphi, which is ranked No. 9 in this week's IWLCA Division II poll, scored the first five goals of the game and raced out to an 8-2 halftime lead in improving to 2-0 on the season. Bryant, which was facing its second straight top-10 team to open the season, fell to 0-2 to start its second varsity campaign.

The Panthers scored just 31 seconds after the opening draw when Catherine Perez (Lyndhurst, N.Y.) raced in alone and beat Bulldog goalie Samantha Libby (Pehacook, N.H.). Perez made it a 2-0 game with 24:20 left in the first half before Hock picked up her first score at the 24:09 mark.

Junior midfielder Leigh Fennessey (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) followed with back-to-back goals just 28 seconds apart to make it 5-0 with 19:12 left in the half.

Bryant got on the board with 12:38 left in the period when freshman Sarah Nielson (Groton, Mass.) scored her first collegiate goal, and the Bulldogs closed to within two when sophomore Cathy Sbarra (Bethpage, N.Y.) put home an Elizabeth Blaisdell (Gorham, Maine) feed with 8:14 left. But Hock figured in three straight Adelphi goals to close the period, getting her second goal of the game with 7:45 left in the half and setting up Jennifer Garone's (West Hempstead, N.Y.) two goals in the last six minutes.

Nielson got her second goal of the game for Bryant to start the second half, but the Panthers put the game away with a 4-0 run to open up a 12-3 lead.

In addition to Hock's four goals, Garone and Fennessey scored three goals each for Adelphi. Freshman attack Dawn Anselmin (Lynbrook, N.Y.) added a goal and a game-high four assists. Sophomore goalie Josephine Coiro (West Babylon, N.Y.) made five saves for the Panthers.

Bryant was led by Nielson, who had three goals, while Sbarra had two. Blaisdell finished with three assists for the Bulldogs, while Libby had seven saves in the Bryant cage.

Adelphi is back in action next Saturday, March 29, traveling to West Chester, Pa. Game time is 12:00 p.m.
