The Adelphi softball team swept Southern Connecticut State 5-0 and 5-3 in their season home-opener this afternoon. The Panthers improve to 7-5 on the season, while the Lady Owls drop to 0-2.
In game one, both teams remained scoreless until the Panthers rattled off four runs in the bottom of the third inning. Ivy Klein advanced to second on a sacrifice from Beth Fletcher and scored on an error by the cather. Ashley Spreer picked up an RBI on a double. Spreer and Katie Omilak each scored unearned runs on a passed ball. A Cheri Pearce homerun in the fifth innning capped the Panthers 5-0 victory. Jaime Pietrantoni threw a four-hitter, giving up no runs and striking out four.
Adelphi scored five runs on six hits and two errors, while SCSU remainied scoreless with four hits and three errors.
The Lady Owls opened up game two with a run as three players walked, forcing the RBI. The Panthers blasted three runs in the second inning as Omilak singled to first base, stole second and scored on a single by Tonia Trapani, one of her two RBI in the doubleheader. Trapani scored again on a Tara Rice double after stealing second. SCSU scored on a double in the fifth inning to close to within two, 4-2. Kristine McCarthy doubled in the sixth inning, scoring on an error as Adelphi held on for the win, 5-3. Carla Buonviaggio threw all seven innings, allowing three earned runs, five walks and striking out four.
Adelphi had five runs on seven hits and one error while Southern Conneticut State had three runs on six hits and two errors.
The Panthers are back in action tomorrow, hosting Felician College at 2:30 p.m.
