A crowd of over 250 were on hand as the Adelphi University women's lacrosse team kicked off the 2003 campaign with an impressive 14-4 victory over Merrimack College, Sunday afternoon at Stiles Field. The Panthers improve to 1-0 on the season and the Warriors drop to 0-1.
Junior Leigh Fennessey had three goals and three assists to lead the Panthers. Sophomore Katherine Hock also had three goals in the win.
Junior Marie Ryan picked up the first goal of the day at 24:27. Back-to-back goals by Erin Black and Stacey Cooper gave the Warriors a 2-1 lead at 14:26. Freshman Dawn Anselmin picked up two goals and assists to spur the Panthers to a 4-0 run to finish the first half leading, 5-2.
The Panthers offense continued to dominate the second half, outscoring the Warriors 9-2. In all, seven different Adelphi players scored in the second half, capping a 7-0 run through the six minutes mark. Merrimack's Kate Condon added a goal on a free position at 2:52. With two minutes remaining, Fennessey and Hock each scored their third goals, both on assists from junior Karen Sulinski. Alisa Arakelian picked up the final goal of the afternoon for the Warriors with ten seconds remaining, as Adelphi won, 14-4.
Adelphi's Josephine Coiro had seven saves in the win. Andrea Johnston had 14 stops for Merrimack.
The Panthers outshot the Warriors 41-11, while also holding a 26-11 advantage in ground balls.
Adelphi returns to action on Friday, March 21, when they travel to Bryant College. Game time is 3:30 p.m.
