Adelphi Men Top New Haven, 73-60 In Regular Season Finale

Garden City, N.Y. - Junior Thomas McCormack had 18 points, including 7-of-8 from the field, to lead Adelphi to a 73-60 win over conference foe New Haven in its final game of the regular season. The Panthers have now won their eighth straight and jump to No.2 in the NYCAC standings. They finish the regular season 19-8 overall and 18-6 in the NYCAC.

Prior to the start of the game, Adelphi honored its graduating seniors, Tony Kellman, Wayne Nelson and Sherman Whittenburg, who combined for 38 points in tonight's win.

After sitting out six games due to injury, Whittenburg collected 17 points for the Panthers. Nelson and Kellman each had 10 points, with Nelson adding a game high 11 rebounds.

Both teams struggled in the first half, each shooting less than 30 percent from the field. The game tied five times in the half as the teams inched to a 21-21 tie with 2:06 remaining. A three-pointer by Whittenburg capped the half, giving Adelphi a 25-23 advantage at intermission.

The Panthers woke up in the second half, shooting a sizzling 60 percent from the field. Adelphi opened the half on a 25-14 run to realize their largest lead, 50-37, with 10 minutes remaining. The Chargers closed to within eight points when a key three-pointer by McCormack sealed the Adelphi victory.

Ismael Caro led New Haven with 17 points. John Sullivan had 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds. No. 3 New Haven finishes the regular season 19-8; 17-7 in the conference and will host No.5 Philadelphia in the first-round of the NYCAC Playoffs

Earlier this season, New Haven handed Adelphi its worst loss of the year, 73-53. Adelphi has now won 11 of its last 12 games heading into post-season play.

Adelphi will host No. 7 seed Queens College in the first round of the NYCAC Playoffs on Tuesday, March 4. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
