The Adelphi University men's basketball team defeated conference foe Philadelphia University, 77-61, Saturday night at Woodruff Hall. The Panthers improve to 12-8 overall and 11-6 in the NYCAC. The Rams drop to 11-9 on the season, 10-7 in the NYCAC.
Seniors Wayne Nelson and Tony Kellman combined for 38 points on the night. Freshman Jamaal Wagner also scored in double figures, picking up 10 points. Junior Juma Allen pulled down a team-high seven rebounds to go along with eight points.
Both teams appeared evenly matched in the first half as the game tied seven times over the first 16 minutes of play. At 24-24, Nelson scored six of the Adelphi's final 10 points of the half as the Panthers finished on a 10-4 run to take the lead, 34-28. The Panthers were 53.8 percent from the field, compared with 41.7 percent for the Rams.
A Kellman three-pointer, one of three in the game, gave Adelphi a nine point advantage at the top of the second half. Philadelphia's Brent Welton scored 11 of his 12 points over the next seven minutes to bring the Rams to within two, 50-48, with 12:44 remaining. This would prove to be the closest they would get as the Panthers outscored the Rams 23-9 over the next ten minutes, topped by a three-pointer from junior Dwayne Thompson. Adelphi held on for the win, 77-61.
The Panthers finished the game with an impressive 50.9 percent shooting, outscoring the Rams 29-22 from the field. Adelphi also held a slight advantage in rebounds, 30-27.
Philadelphia was led by Graham Edwards with 15 points and six rebounds.
Next up, Adelphi travels to Queens College for a Wednesday night matchup. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
