Sophomore Melanie Mangone led a balanced Panther attack, picking up 16 of her team-high 22 points in the first half to lead Adelphi to a 81-73 conference win over Philadelphia University. Adelphi extends its win streak to three, improving to 13-8 overall and 12-6 in the NYCAC. The Lady Rams drop to 11-6 overall and 9-6 in the NYCAC.
A total of five Adelphi players scored in double figures on the night. Sophomore Jesse Dlabola had 17 points, five assists and five steals. Freshmen Meranne Whitney and Carlyshia Hurdle added 13 and 12 points, respectively. Junior Jaime Douglas had 11 points along with a game-high 13 rebounds, on the way to her tenth double-double of the season.
The Panthers, with the help of a 53.1 percent shooting on the half, jumped out to a quick seven-point lead, outscoring the Lady Rams, 13-6. Philadelphia responded on a 7-0 run, to tie the game, 13-13, at 13:02, and took its first lead of the contest on a three-pointer by junior Jean-Marie Reilly at 9:30. A lay-up by Douglas sparked a 9-5 Panther comeback with 3:39 remaining in the half. Reilly hit another three-pointer as the Lady Rams opened up their largest lead of six points, 39-33, at 1:44. Mangone, with the help of back-to-back steals by Dlabola and Douglas, rattled off the last six points of the half to tie the game, 39-39.
The Lady Rams came out fired up in the second half, opening up a six-point lead in the first four minutes of play. The Panthers answered with a 16-8 run, capped by a three-pointer by Dlabola, to take the lead, 53-52. The game would tie three more times in the half, a total of seven on the night, with Adelphi gaining the final advantage. Dlabola scored 12 of the Panthers final 18 points for the win, 81-73.
On the game, Adelphi shot a season-high 47.6 percent from the field, compared to 46.7 percent for Philadelphia. Both teams picked up 35 rebounds, while the Panthers offense collected 11 team steals, forcing 18 PhilaU turnovers.
The Lady Rams were led by sophomore Samara Speaks with a game-high 26 points. Reilly added 17 points.
Adelphi is back in action this Tuesday, traveling to Queens College. Tip off is at 5:00 p.m.
