The Adelphi men's basketball team suffered a tough 68-59 road loss to host NYIT, Thursday night in Old Westbury, N.Y. The Bears snap the Panthers three-game win streak as Adelphi drops to 11-8 overall and 10-6 in the NYCAC. NYIT improves to 14-6 overall and 12-5 in the NYCAC.
Senior Wayne Nelson led Adelphi with 23 points. Junior Thomas McCormack had 16 points, along with six rebounds and five assists.
The Panthers struggled in the first half, going 0-for-6 to start the game, on their way to a dismal 23.1 percent from the field. Nelson, who contributed 13 of Adelphi's 19 first half points, drained a three-pointer to put the Panthers on board at 14:55. The Bears did not fair much better as the Panthers' defense forced 11 turnovers, keeping the game to within five, 24-19, at the end of the half.
The Bears opened on a 9-5 run to extend their lead to seven points, 31-24, at 15:42. The Panthers rallied back, outscoring NYIT 11-4 over the next six minutes to tie the game, 35-35. Adelphi would never take the lead as the Bears opened up their largest gap of the night, 54-44 , with 3:25 remaining. AU shot a much improved 40 percent from the field, including 6-of-10 from three-point range, but it wasn't enough as Tech held on for the win, 69-58.
Sophomore Patrick Tunstead led NYIT with 31 points.
On the game, NYIT shot 41.9 percent from the field, compared to 32.1 percent for Adelphi. The Panther defense forced 16 NYIT turnovers, yet struggled on the boards, as Tech outrebounded Adelphi 46-24.
NYIT has won its last three match-ups with Adelphi, dating back to the NYCAC Conference finals a year ago. Earlier this season, the Bears defeated Adelphi 77-74 at Woodruff Hall.
