Senior guard Wayne Nelson led the Adelphi men's basketball team to a 57-44 victory over conference foe Concordia. Nelson led the Panthers with 17 points and 11 rebounds. This win is the Panthers second straight. Adelphi improves to 11-7 on the season and 10-5 in the NYCAC. The Clippers fall to 1-16 on the season and 0-15 in the NYCAC.
Freshman Jamaal Wagner added a career-best 13 points along with four rebounds.
Adelphi jumped out the early 2-0 lead by a short hook by junior Juma Allen. The Clippers countered with a running lay-up down the lane by Will Cave. A tough defense by the Panthers held the Clippers to only two points until the 16:19 mark in the first half. Adelphi continued their excellent team play by pushing the lead to 24-6 with 7:46 remaining in the half. The Clippers finished the half with a strong defense that held the Panthers to only 12 more points in the half. The Clippers offense came together and Adelphi went into the half with a 34-17 advantage.
Concordia's Will Cave opened the second half on fire scoring the Clippers first 8 points. This explosion of offense closed the score to 39-31 with 10:33 remaining in the game. With 9:37 remaining Jeff Harper hit a three-pointer to close the Panther lead to 39-34. That is the closest the Clippers got as Adelphi pulled away to the 57-44 victory.
The Panthers had a 42-36 rebounding advantage in the contest and 20-14 points in the paint advantage. The Clippers had a slight shooting advantage shooting 36.2 percent for the game while Adelphi shot 31.1 percent from the field.
Adelphi returns to action this Thursday, traveling to NYIT. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
