The Adelphi men's basketball team picked up its six straight win, soundly defeating Dowling College, 78-50, Tuesday night at Woodruff Hall. The Panthers improve to 17-8 on the season and 16-6 in the NYCAC. The Golden Lions drop to 7-19 overall and 5-18 in the conference.
For the second straight game, senior Tony Kellman led the Panthers, picking up a game-high 15 points, along with four rebounds and four assists. Senior Wayne Nelson had 13 points and six rebounds, while freshman Eric Martin chipped in 12 points, six assists and three steals.
Dowling led 7-4 in the opening minutes of the contest, but Adelphi quickly responded. Freshman Jamaal Wagner scored five of next nine Adelphi unanswered points to open on 15-7 lead. Adelphi shot 53.1 percent from the field in the first half, with Nelson leading the charge with 11 points. The Panthers never looked back, outscoring the Golden Lions, 28-18, to hold an 18 point advantage going into the half.
In the second half, Adelphi saw its lead grow to 32 points with 8:00 remaining, as Dowling hit just seven-of-26 from the field, or 26.9 percent.
The Panther defense held the advantage in the contest, outrebounding the Golden Lions 40-35. While both teams committed 25 turnovers each, Adelphi managed to convert Dowling errors into 32 points in the contest.
Adelphi has now won nine of its last 10 games and holds onto the #4 spot as the NYCAC Tournament playoffs approach. Next up, the Panthers host Mercy College on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. This is a make-up game orginally scheduled for February 18, but postponed due to inclement weather.
