Adelphi Men Roll Past Molloy, 84-61

Garden City, N.Y. - Senior forward Wayne Nelson poured in a career-best 32 points along with a game-high 12 rebounds to lead the Adelphi University men's basketball team to a 84-61 conference victory over Molloy College on Thursday night at Woodruff Hall. The Panthers have now won their last four and improve to 15-8 overall and 13-6 in the NYCAC. The Lions drop to 10-13, 8-12 in the conference.

Junior forward Dwayne Nelson tallied 13 points from the bench, while senior guard Tony Kellman added 11 points and four rebounds. Junior Thomas McCormack led the team with six assists, along with seven rebounds and six points.

The Panthers opened the contest on a 22-12 run. The Lions rallied back on a 9-5 run to close to within six points, 27-21, at 6:45. Back-to-back three-pointers by Nelson, he was 6-of-8 on the night, capped with a dunk, brought Adelphi back to a 13 point advantage with a minute remaining. At the half, the Panthers led, 36-27.

The Nelson show continued in the second half as he led all players with 23 points. As a team, Adelphi shot 59.3 percent, compared to 34.4 percent for Molloy. The Panthers realized their largest lead of the contest, 80-55, with 2:07 remaining.

On the game, Adelphi was 53.7 percent from the field and 44.4 percent from behind the arc. Both teams had 37 rebounds, but Molloy held a 12-4 advantage in second chance points.

The Lions were led by sophomore forward Moises Garcia with 20 points. Senior forward Moses Marcus had 13 points and a team-high eight rebounds.

Nelson's previous best of 31 points was set on December 15, 2001 against NYIT. This was his sixth double-double of the season.

Tonight's contest will be aired on Telecare, cablevision channel 31, this Saturday at approximately 9:00 p.m., immediately following the Adelphi women's basketball game. It will be rebroadcast on Sunday at 10:00 p.m.

Adelphi returns to action this Saturday, traveling to Southampton College. Game time is 3:30 p.m.
