Adelphi Women Fall To STAC, 82-76

Garden City, N.Y. - Sophomore Meranne Whitney's career-high 22 points were not enough to lift the Adelphi women's basketball team past St. Thomas Aquinas, as the Panthers saw their four game win streak snapped, 82-76. With the loss, Adelphi falls to 14-9 on the season and 13-7 in the conference. The Lady Spartans sweep its regular season series with the Panthers, improving to 16-5 overall and 15-4 in the NYCAC.

Junior Jamie Douglas led all players with a game-high 23 points along with 11 rebounds for her tenth double-double of the season. Sophomore Melanie Mangone had 13 points.

STAC opened the half on a 15-9 run. Douglas picked up the next five points and sophomore Jesse Dlabola added a three-pointer as Adelphi responded with 12 unanswered points. The Panthers held a six-point advantage until the 6:29 mark as the Lady Spartans rallied back on a 10-4 run to tie the game, 29-29, with 3:42 remaining. STAC took control over the final minutes, holding onto a four-point lead at intermission, 39-34.

In the second half, the Lady Spartans led by as much as eight points, with 12:22 left on the clock. Adelphi began to chip away at the lead, outscoring STAC 17-10 over the next seven minutes. A Dlabola steal, one of six in the game, converted to a lay-up by Douglas gave Adelphi its only lead of the second half, 68-67, with 5:09 remaining. The Lady Spartans, who shot 53.6 percent in the half, finished the game on a 15-8 run, 82-76.

On the game, STAC held the advantage, shooting 50 percent to Adelphi's 40 percent. The Lady Spartans also outrebounded the Panthers 40-30.

Senior Josephine Alohan led a balanced STAC attack with 22 points. Sophomore Caitlin Hayes had 16 points and a game-high 14 rebounds.
