The Adelphi men's basketball team defeated St. Thomas Aquinas, 83-59, Saturday night at Woodruff Hall. Senior Wayne Nelson led the Panthers with 19 points and five rebounds. Adelphi improves to 14-8 overall and 13-6 in the NYCAC. The Spartans drop to 2-20, 2-18 in the NYCAC.
Senior Tony Kellman collected 15 points and six rebounds. Freshman Ben Kenyon had a career-best 11 points and seven rebounds. Junior Thomas McCormack registered a game-high nine rebounds and nine assists to go along with six points.
Adelphi and STAC opened the contest with matching three-pointers, 3-3, at 18:50. This would prove to be the closest the Spartans would get as the Panthers, who shot 66.7 percent, quickly opened a 13-point lead over the next four minutes. Freshman William Smith contributed five of his career-best seven points in the first half. Adelphi's only scare came as a STAC three-pointer cut the lead to five with 6:33 remaining. The Panthers closed out the half on a 14-9 run, including 8-of-10 from the free point line, to lead 38-28.
The Panthers held the Spartans to just five points over the first seven minutes of the second half, to open up a 52-35 lead. Adelphi, which led by as much as 27 points, picked up its fourth straight victory, 83-59.
Adelphi shot 58 percent in the game, compared to STAC's 40.8 percent. The Panthers also held the advantage in rebounds, 39-22.
St. Thomas Aquinas was led by Kahill Dawkins with 23 points.
