Senior forward Wayne Nelson drained five three-point field goals on his way to a team-high 17 points to lead the Adelphi men's basketball team to a 58-46 win at Queens College, Wednesday night. The Panthers improve to 13-8 overall and 11-6 in the NYCAC. The Knights drop to 10-12 and 8-11 in the NYCAC.
Nelson also led the team with seven rebounds. Junior forward Dwayne Thompson had 12 points and senior Tony Kellman added 10 points and five rebounds. Junior Thomas McCormack dished out six assists to go along with six rebounds and seven points in the game.
Adelphi shot 44.4 percent in the first half, including 7-of-18 from three-point range to take a 33-25 lead into intermission.
The second half proved to be rocky for both teams as the Panthers shot only 25.9 percent and the Knights 23.8 percent from field. Adelphi outscored Queens, 25-21, on the strength of its 44.4 percent shooting from beyond the arc. The Knights hit a dismal 14 percent, 2-of-14, for three-pointers in the game. Queens did hold a 40-34 advantage in rebounds.
Alex McLean led Queens with a team-high 17 points and eight rebounds.
This was the second lowest winning score for the Panthers this season, who defeated Concordia College, 57-44, on February 4th.
Adelphi returns to action this Saturday, hosting St. Thomas Aquinas College this Saturday at 7:30 p.m. Earlier that afternoon, Adelphi will host its annual Alumni Game at 1:00 p.m.
