Women Fall To Dowling, 86-80

Oakdale, N.Y. - The Adelphi women's basketball team dropped a close, 80-86 match-up to host Dowling College, Saturday afternoon at St. John's Eastern LI Campus. With the loss, the Panthers drop to 10-8 on the season and 9-6 in the NYCAC. The Lions remain atop the conference standings with a 15-4 record, 14-2 in the NYCAC.

Junior Jaime Douglas notched her ninth double-double of the season, posting 13 of her 21 points in the first half, to go along with 14 boards. Sophomore Melanie Mangone registered a team-high 26 points and sophomore Meranne Whitney had a season-high 17 points and seven rebounds.

Adelphi struggled early on in the first half, trailing Dowling by as much as 12 points. A late first half surge brought the Panthers to within one point, 41-40, at intermission. Douglas, Mangone and Whitney combined for 35 points as Adelphi shot 39 percent from the field.

The Lions pulled open another 12 point lead in the second half and the Panthers found themselves trailing by 10 points with three minutes remaining. A steal and basket by junior Kerri Kirschbaum, who picked up all of her six points in the second half, sparked a Panther run, tying the game, 78-78 with 1:46 to go. Dowling managed to hold off Adelphi, for the win, 86-80.

Dowling was led by Zulmary Andino who had 33 points, including 10 of 14 from the field and 12 for-14 from the free throw line. Melissa Danchalski had a team-high 13 rebounds.

Dowling shot 52.6 percent in the game, while Adelphi held the advantage in rebounds, 45-39.

Adelphi returns to action on Tuesday, hosting Concordia College at 7:30 p.m.
