The Adelphi men's team defeated Dowling College, 82-75, Saturday evening at St. John's LI Eastern Campus. The Panthers have won their last two to improve to 10-7 overall and 9-5 in the NYCAC. The Lions drop to 6-12; 4-11 in the conference.
Senior Wayne Nelson poured in a game-high 25 points, going 5-for-9 from three-point range, along with five rebounds. Senior Tony Kellman had 17 points and junior Thomas McCormack added 14 points, seven rebounds and six assists.
Adelphi got off to a slow start, trailing Dowling 17-12, with eight minutes left in the half. Over the next five minutes, the Panthers outscored the Lions 13-4, led by Nelson, who rattled off three consecutive three-pointers. Adelphi held a one-point advantage going in to the half, 33-32.
The Panthers extended their lead in the second half, on a 13-2 run. Dowling began to chip away at the Adelphi lead, closing to within five points, 70-75, with less than two minutes remaining. Both teams combined for 49 fouls in the contest as tempers flared late in the second half with both coaches picked up technical fouls. Kellman scored three of Adelphi's final five points as the Panthers held on for the win, 82-75.
Laimonas Cicinis led a balanced Dowling attack with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Matthew Klimkoski also had 19 points with nine rebounds.
The Panthers return to action on Tuesday, February 4, hosting Concordia College at 5:30 p.m.
