Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University women's basketball team handed the University of New Haven its first conference loss of the season,68-61, in a Tuesday night conference match up. The Panthers improve to 3-3 overall and 2-1 in the NYCAC, while the Chargers drop to 3-3 and 3-1 in the NYCAC.

Junior Melanie Mangone led all players with 19 points, including 9-of-10 from the line. Senior Jamie Douglas also scored in double figures, recording 14 points and six boards.

The Panthers jumped out to a 10-0 lead over the first four minutes of play. Sophomore Carlyshia Hurdle, who scored all eight of her points in the first half, gave Adelphi its largest lead of the half at 13:19, after sinking two free throws. Over the next nine minutes, the Chargers began to chip away at the Panther lead, going on a 18-7 run and trailed, 23-21, with 3:55 remaining in the half. Adelphi responded with a 7-2 run, capped by a three-pointer from freshman Betty Mendieta at 1:09. The Panthers held a 32-27 advantage going into the intermission.

The Chargers opened the second half on a 13-9 run to realize their first lead of the contest, 42-41, at 10:37. Mendieta put the Panthers back on top hitting back-to-back free throws. While UNH would tie the game twice more, they would never lead again. Although the Chargers shot 42.4 percent compared to 33.3 percent for the Panthers, they committed 16 turnovers in the second half.

In the contest, Adelphi shot 75 percent from behind the arc and 82.4 percent from the line.

The Chargers were led by sophomore Amanda Freeman with 14 points and 13 rebounds. Freshman Ashley Hilton added 10 points.

Adelphi returns to action on Saturday, December 13, traveling to Philadelphia University. Game time is 2:00 p.m.
