Adelphi junior Laura Phillips (Plattsburgh, N.Y.) made her first career start and responded with career-highs in both points (16) and rebounds (13) to lead the Panthers to a 21 point conference victory over Mercy College. With the 74-54 win Adelphi improves to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in NYCAC play, while Mercy is still searching for their first win of the season (0-4, 0-3).
Adelphi jumped out to an early 12-5 lead but Mercy fought back with a 7-0 run of their own that was capped off by Elissa Krossber (Canandaigua, N.Y.), who drained a three-pointer to pull the Lady Flyers even at 12. Mercy even took the lead briefly on another three-pointer by Krossber at the 3:30 mark. But this time Adelphi answered back, on two made free throws by Carlyshia Hurdle (Brentwood, N.Y.). The Panthers took a four-point lead into halftime, 30-26.
Adelphi and Mercy went back and forth, trading baskets early in the second half. But a rash of holding and touch fouls called on the Panthers put Mercy in the bonus at the 11:46 mark. The lady Flyers were unable to take advantage of the foul situation as Adelphi stormed out to an 11-point lead, 51-40 on a jumper by Hurdle.
Adelphi pushed their lead to 15, 59-44, with 6:03 to play on two made free throws by Phillips. Adelphi continued to push their advantage and opened a 20-point lead, 67-47, on a three-pointer from deep by Betty Mendieta (North Bergen, N.J.) with 4:03 left. Adelphi closed out the game strong and came away with the 74-54 win.
Mercy was led by Krossber who dropped in 13 points, Teresa Rozza (Brooklyn, N.Y.) chipped in nine. Rachel Awolowo (Central Islip, N.Y.) led the Lady Flyers in rebounds with 10. Adelphi had four players in double figures, led by Phillips with 16, Jamie Douglas (Hopatcong, N.J.) with 12, and Mendieta and Hurdle with 11 and 10.
Adelphi returns to action Saturday, December 6th when they play host to NYCAC rival C. W. Post at 5:30 pm.
