Adelphi held Mercy to just six field goals on 26 percent shooting in the second half and came away with a 77-58 victory. With the win Adelphi improves to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in NYCAC play, while Mercy drops to 2-2 overall and continues to search for their first NYCAC victory.
Adelphi took their first lead of the game with 15:33 left in the first half on a three-pointer from Jamaal Wagner (Jamaica, N.Y.), the Panthers never trailed after that. Adelphi then went on an 11-0 run to take a 19-10 lead with 10:22 left to play in the first half. The run featured three three-pointers from Adelphi and was capped off by a driving lay in from Dwayne Thompson (Cambria Heights, N.Y.).
Mercy fought back and went on a 9-0 run of their own, to cut the lead to 21-19. But that was as close as Mercy would get in the first half, Wagner hit another three and Blaize converted two free throws with less then a minute left to give Adelphi a 35-27 lead heading in to halftime.
In the second half Adelphi put the clamps on Mercy with their defense. The Panthers extended their lead to 19 on two made free throws by Wagner with 8:50 left to play. Mercy then went on a 16-4 run over the next three and a half minutes to close the gap to seven, 56-49. But Wagner put a stop to the Flyer run when he hit a deep three and was fouled, Adelphi continued to pull away and when the buzzer sounded the Panthers walked away with a 77-58 victory.
Wagner led Adelphi with 23 points (7-10 shooting), Thomas McCormack (Breezy Point, N.Y.) put in a solid all around performance, chipping in with 13 points, seven assists and six boards. Kevin Green (Brooklyn, N.Y.) was the high man for Mercy with 12 points, Dominic Cuzzi (Bronx, N.Y.) and Dana Holmes (Freeport, N.Y.) chipped in 11 and 10.
Adelphi returns to action Saturday, December 6th when they play host to NYCAC rival C. W. Post at 7:30 pm.
