Adelphi Women Steal Win From Philadelphia, 68-66

Philadelphia, PA - Adelphi outscored Philadelphia 37-29 in the second half to erase a six point halftime deficit and come away with a 68-66 win. The win extends Adelphi's win streak to three, while snapping Philadelphia's at five. With the win Adelphi improves to 4-3 overall and 3-1 in the NYCAC, while Philadelphia falls to 5-2 overall and 4-1 in NYCAC play.

Philadelphia came out of the locker room hot and opened up a 6-0 lead, but the Panthers battled back and cut the lead to 10-11 with 12:46 left in the first half on a bucket by Laura Phillips (Plattsburgh, N.Y.). The Rams used a 9-3 run to extend their lead to 20-13 before Adelphi got five straight points from Melanie Mangone (Middle Village, N.Y.) to close to 29-26 with 4:06 left to play in the half. That was as close as the Panthers would get in the first half, as Philadelphia pulled away, and entered the locker room with a 37-31 halftime lead.

Adelphi opened the second half pressing Philadelphia and both teams exchanged transition buckets, with the Panthers cutting Philadelphia's lead to just two, 44-42 with 15:28 left to play. Adelphi then tied the game at 52 on a fast break lay-up by Betty Mendieta (North Bergen, N.J.), but Ivy Laws (Wyncote, PA) answered back for the Rams by hitting a foul line jumper to give Philadelphia a two point lead.

Adelphi closed to within one, 62-61, before a low post move by Carlyshia Hurdle (Brentwood, N.Y.) gave the Panthers their first lead of the game 63-62. Hurdle converted another lay-up with just 1:28 left on the clock to extend Adelphi's lead to three, 65-62. But Philadelphia hit one out of two free throws and Samara Speakes (Philadelphia, P.A.) hit a three-pointer with 15.7 seconds left to give the Rams a 66-65 edge.

With 7.7 seconds left on the clock Jamie Douglas (Hopatcong, N.J.) converted in the low post and was fouled. Douglas hit the free throw, giving the Panthers the lead and a 68-66 win. Douglas lead the Panthers with 13 points, and seven boards, Hurdle posted her fourth double-double of the year for Adelphi, grabbing 13 boards to go along with 11 points. Jean-Marie Reilly (Collegeville, P.A.) scored a game-high 16 points for the Rams.

Adelphi returns to action January 6th when they play host to St. Thomas Aquinas at 7:30 pm in Woodruff Hall.
