Adelphi went to the free throw line just 13 times, while Philadelphia shot 40 free throws. The difference in free throw attempts proved too much for the Panthers to overcome, falling to Philadelphia 84-71. With the win Philadelphia improves to 8-2 overall and remains unbeaten in NYCAC play at 5-0, while Adelphi falls to 4-3 overall and 2-2 in the NYCAC.
Philadelphia come out fast and went on a 17-2 run in the first five and a half minutes of the game. The Panthers finally found their offense and responded with an 11-3 run of their own to cut the Ram lead to 20-13 with 11:43 to play in the first half. But Philadelphia extended its lead to 32-24 with 5:16 left to play in the half on two free throws by Tayron Thomas (Bristol, P.A.). Again the Panthers responded with a run, this time Adelphi used a 12-2 run to cut the Philadelphia lead to one, 35-34 going in to the half.
Both teams struggled to find rhythm in the beginning of the second half, combining for just eight points in the first four minutes of play, as Philadelphia opened its one point halftime lead to five, 41-36. Then Philadelphia heated up, hitting three consecutive three-pointers to open the game up and take a 55-43 advantage with 11:27 left to play. The last three were by Brent Welton (Philadelphia, P.A.) collecting his 1,000th career point.
The Panthers clawed back and pulled to within six, 59-53 on a lay-up by Jamaal Wagner (Jamaica, N.Y.) at the 8:02 mark. But that was as close as the Panthers would get, Philadelphia extended their lead and walked away with an 84-71 victory. Dwayne Thompson (Cambria Heights, N.Y.) was the high-scorer for Adelphi with 18 points to go along with six rebounds, Thomas McCormack had a near triple-double, scoring 11 points, grabbing eight rebounds and handing out seven assists. Thomas scored a game-high 31 points for Philadelphia and grabbed a game-high 10 boards.
The Panthers return to action January 6th when they play host to NYCAC foe St. Thomas Aquinas at 5:30 pm at Woodruff Hall.
