Junior midfielder Omar Gordon scored the game-winning goal and freshman goalkeeper Josh Wagenaar earned his seventh shutout as 16th-ranked Hartwick College took a 2-0 victory over Adelphi University in Atlantic Soccer Conference play on Saturday at Elmore Field.
Hartwick (14-2-1, 3-1-1 ASC), which controlled the tempo of the game throughout most of the match, finished with a 13-2 advantage in shots and a 3-2 edge in corner kicks.
Gordon gave the Hawks a 1-0 lead at the 5:32 mark of the first half.
He headed in a cross from freshman defender Craig Potter from two yards.
In the first 10 minutes of play, Adelphi (8-6-3, 2-2-1 ASC) had its only scoring opportunity off a direct kick. Junior midfielder Tal Sheinfeld sent a shot from the left side of the 18-yard box over the crossbar.
At the 30:47 mark, junior midfielder/forward Edwin Ruiz gave Hartwick a 2-0 lead. Senior forward Greg Victor sent a cross from the right flank to the center of penalty box, where the ball deflected off the hands of Adelphi goalkeeper Tom Cunningham. Ruiz gained possession of the loose ball and put a shot into the back of the net for the Hawks.
Cunningham kept Adelphi in the match with two outstanding saves late in the opening half. Hartwick forward/midfielder Rob Catana a through ball from Ruiz and took a shot from 15 yards. Cunningham made a sliding save on the shot and deflected the ball back to Catana, who then fired another shot that Cunningham deflected out of play. Cunningham made five saves in the first half for the Panthers.
In the second half, Hartwick's defensive block limited Adelphi to one shot on goal. Senior forward Marlon McEachnie took a shot from 11 yards and Wagenaar made the save.
Wagenaar (12-1-1) stopped one shot in 90 minutes for the Hawks, and
Cunningham (7-5-1) made seven saves in 90 minutes for the Panthers.
