Molloy shot 50 percent from behind the three point line while holding Adelphi to 34 percent shooting to top the Panthers 91-78 in Adelphi's NYCAC opener. With the loss Adelphi falls to 1-3 overall and 0-1 in NYCAC play, while Molloy evens their overall record at 2-2 and their conference record at 1-1.
Both teams came out aggressive and pressed on made baskets, trying to force the tempo. The game went back and forth early but the difference was Molloy's ability to penetrate the Panther defense and then hit from behind the three-point arc. Molloy shot 60 percent (6-10) from three-point range in the first half compared to just 25 percent (2-8) for Adelphi.
Molloy opened up its largest lead of the first half on a made jumper by Francesca Romano (South Ozone Park, N.Y.), which extended the Lions lead to 14, 46-32. Adelphi battled back and closed the lead to six, 48-42 on a low post bucket by Jamie Douglas (Hopatcong, N.J.). Adelphi went into the locker at halftime trailing 52-42.
Molloy opened the second half strong and built a 13-point lead. But Adelphi used an 8-2 run to cut the Molloy lead to six with 13:49 remaining in the second half. Senior Kerri Kirschbaum (Leonardo, N.J.) hit back-to-back three pointers and had ten points in a two-minute span to spark the Panther run. But the Lions responded with a 10-4 run to put the game out of reach.
Meranne Whitney (Nashua, N.H.) led the Panthers with 15 points and Kirshbaum and Douglas each chipped in 14 points. Carlyshia Hurdle (Brentwood, N.Y.) paced the Panthers on the boards, collected 13 rebounds to go along with 10 points.
The Lions were led by Donna Lohrey (Glendale, N.Y.) who had a game-high 24 points. Rose Bruno (Staten Island, N.Y.) contributed 17 points and eight boards to the win and Romano collected a team-high nine rebounds to along with ten points.
Adelphi returns to action December 4th when they travel to Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. for a 6 pm NYCAC showdown with Mercy College.
