Men's Basketball Edges Caldwell In Overtime, 77-74

Oragneburg, N.J. - The Adelphi men's basketball held on for a 77-74 overtime win over Caldwell College in day two of the Dominican College Tournament on Saturday night. Senior forward Dwayne Thompson led four players in double figures, scoring 14 of his team-high 16 points in the first half. The Panthers improve to 2-1 on the season.

Freshman guard Kimani Blaize had a collegiate best 14 points and seven rebounds. Sophomore forward Eric Martin added a career-high 14 points, including 8-of-11 from the charity stripe. Martin also had a team-high eight rebounds. Sophomore forward Jamaal Wagner had 12 points and six rebounds.

Led by Thompson who was was 5-5 from the field and 3-3 from the free throw line, Adelphi led by as much as 14 points in the first half. The Panthers held a comfortable 34-27 lead going into intermission.

Adelphi racked up 28 of its total 41 personal fouls in the second half. With ten Adelphi fouls over the first six minutes of the half, Caldwell seized its opportunity to close the gap, eventually tying the game, 40-40, with 13:17 remaining. Caldwell took a brief two point lead at 10:54. Wagner hit a three-pointer to spur a Panther run, as they outscored the Cougars 23-9 to lead 66-54 with 3:31 remaining. Over the next three minutes, the Panthers were scoreless allowing the Cougars to close to within one, 67-66, with 31 seconds on the clock. A total of five Panther players fouled out in the contest, with the Cougars collecting 20 of its 40 second half points from the free throw line. Senior guard Thomas McCormack hit 1-of-2 from the line, sending the game into overtime.

The Panthers jumped out to a comfortable six point lead in overtime, 75-69 capped by a field goal from Blaize. The Cougars rallied back, on a 5-0 run to trail by one point with 11 seconds to go. A Caldwell foul sent freshman guard Samuel Jenkins to the line, hitting both attempts as the Panthers held on for the win, 77-74.

The Cougars were led by Ron Harris with 34 points and five rebounds. Mark Kelly chipped in nine points.

Adelphi returns to action this Tuesday, November 25, kicking off its conference schedule at Molloy College. Tip off is at 7:30 p.m.
