The Adelphi women's basketball team notched its first win of the 2003-04 season with a 74-58 victory over St. Rose College in the consolation game of the Shippensburg Tournament this Saturday afternoon. The Panthers improve to 1-2 overall while Golden Knights drop to 2-2.
Sophomore forward Carlyshia Hurdle came off the bench to lead all players with 17 points to go along with 13 rebounds. Sophomore Melanie Mangone played a balanced game for the Panthers, recording 13 points and four assists, while also collecting eight rebounds and six steals. Freshman Betty Mendieta scored nine of her collegiate best 13 points in the first half.
St. Rose jumped out to an early lead, outscoring Adelphi 8-0 over the first 4:50 minutes of the contest. Sparked by a three-point field goal by Mangone, the Panthers answered with a 18-6 run to pull ahead at 9:27. St. Rose rallied back, led by freshman guard Mary Lewis who scored six of the team's next seven points to close to within one. The Panthers would never relinquish their lead, holding a 31-26 advantage at the end of the first half.
The Golden Knights continued to chip away at the Panther lead, opening the second half on a 10-4 run to close again to within one point, 37-36, at 15:43. Senior Jamie Douglas scored four of her eight points over the next several minutes to help open the Adelphi lead, 44-36. Over the final 13 minutes, Adelphi would outscore St. Rose 30-22, shooting 50 percent from the field in the second half.
The Golden Knights were led by Lewis with 15 points, six assists and six boards. Courtney Ludwig had 13 points and Kelli-Ann Henry had 10 points and a game-high 14 rebounds.
Adelphi returns to action next Tuesday, November 25, opening its conference season on the road at Molloy College. Tip off is 5:00 p.m.
