Adelphi was held to just 20 percent shooting in the second half as #7 Glenville State topped the Panthers 59-39 at the Shippensburg tournament. With the loss Adelphi drops to 0-2 on the season, while Glenville State improves to 3-0 with the win.
Glenville opened the game with a 7-2 run to build an early lead that they would never give up. The Lady Pioneers stretched their lead to 12-6 with 13:24 left in the first half on a free throw by Rachel Redick (Franklin, PA). But the Panthers went on a 7-2 run of their own to close within one point at 14-13, on a lay-up by Carlyshia Hurdle (Brentwood, N.Y.). But Glenville pulled away and entered halftime with a 28-22 lead.
Glenville stepped up the defensive pressure in the second half, holding Adelphi to just 17 points. Glenville took their largest lead of the game with 2:49 remaining when Katie Wimer (Newark, OH) dropped in a jumper to give the Pioneers a 23 point lead, 57-34. Adelphi kept fighting until the final buzzer and closed the score to 59-39 on a free throw by Hurdle.
Melanie Mangone (Middle Village, N.Y.) and Hurdle led the Panthers with nine points and seven rebounds apiece. Junior Laura Phillips (Plattsburgh, N.Y.) also contributed six points and eight boards. The Pioneers were led by Redick who scored 14 points on 5-16 shooting to go along with six rebounds.
Adelphi will play either host Shippensburg University or the College of St. Rose at 1:00 pm tomorrow.
