Men's Basketball Falls To UMass-Lowell, 89-69

Lowell, Mass. - The Adelphi University men's basketball team suffered a tough 89-69 loss in its season opener to UMass-Lowell Saturday afternoon at Costello Gym. Sophomore Jamaal Wagner led four players in double figures with a career-best 18 points and six rebounds.

Sophomore guard Ben Kenyon (Union, NJ) added 13 points. Senior guard Thomas McCormack chipped in 12 points (5 of 9 FG) and six assists while senior forward Dwayne Thompson (Cambria Heights, NY) had 10 points.

The game was tied early in the first half, 10-10. The River Hawks went on 11-3 run, led by five points from sophomore guard Brandon Arnette( Lake Park, FL), to grab a 21-13 cushion with 11:08 left. The Panthers trailed 30-43 at the break.

UML posted a 62-44 lead with 12 minutes, 23 seconds left to play on a pair of free throws by Elad Inbar(Kiryat Haim, Israel). The Panthers outscored UML 18-9, led by six points from McCormack which cut the lead to 71-62 with 5:52 remaining in the game.

The River Hawks answered with a 14-4 run, to boost the lead to 85-66 with 40 seconds to play.

Sophomore forward Stacey Moragne (Evanston, IL) registered career-highs of 26 points and 15 rebounds to lead UML. Inbar and Arnette each added 12 points. Senior guard Dana Jones (Bronx, NY) had 10 points and three assists.

Adelphi returns to action next Friday as they travel to the Dominican College Tournament. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m.
