Princeton, NJ -
Adelphi dropped a hard fought game to Princeton 2-1 to drop to 6-4-1 on the season. With the win Princeton improves to 4-3-2. Princeton put tremendous pressure on Adelphi right from the opening whistle, controlling play in the first half. Adelphi's defense and goalie Tom Cunningham came up with some huge stops to keep the game even.
But in the 19th minute Princeton put one in the back of the Panther net. Adelphi took a free kick that was collected by Princeton; the Tigers quickly took advantage of Adelphi's miscue and went on the counter attack. Ryan Rich received a ball from Jame Wunsch and struck a shot toward the goal on the ground to take advantage of the wet grass. Cunningham came out to make the stop but the ball skipped by him and into the back of the Panther goal.
Princeton dominated play in the first half, both in the air and the midfield, but after the half Adelphi came out and battled back to take momentum away from Princeton. In the 29th minute of the second half the Tigers picked up an errant Panther clear and ripped a shot toward goal for what looked like the go ahead goal. But freshman Ron Forman slid and knocked the ball out of bounds, saving a goal.
With 9:31 left in the game Adelphi's persistence and tough play paid off as Padraig Drew sent a corner kick into the Tiger box. Marlon Clarke headed the ball towards the net but Princeton keeper Eric White was there to turn the shot away. However White gave up a rebound, which Joseph Afful hammered into the back of the net to knot the game at one.
The play was back and forth after Adelphi's goal, with neither team able to break through. In the final minute of play Princeton caught a break when the referee whistled Matt Sether for a foul in the right corner of the Panthers half of the field. Franco Tripicchio took the free kick and the Tigers took advantage of the opportunity. Wunsch headed the Tripicchio cross into the back of Adelphi's net to give Princeton a 2-1 win.
Adelphi made a final push in the last minute but a Panther cross was headed wide by Sigurd Riksfjord. Cunningham collected six saves in the loss, while White picked up two saves and the victory.
Adelphi returns to action Saturday, October 11th when they travel to Drexel for a 2 pm kick-off.
