Garden CIty, N.Y. -
Adelphi shut out Philadelphia University this afternoon to stay undefeated in Atlantic Soccer Conference Play. The Panthers scored the game winning goal in the 104th minute of action to slip past the Rams 1-0. With the win Adelphi improves to 6-3-1 overall and 2-0 in the ASC, while Philadelphia falls to 4-5 overall and 0-1 in ASC play.
The first half of the game was played in the middle of the field with neither team able to push the advantage. Both defenses played solid in the first half, keeping the play primarily in the middle of the field. But Adelphi came out in the second half and increased the pressure on Philadelphia's defense.
Adelphi's pressure finally paid off in the 10th minute when sophomore Padraig Drew and Philadelphia goalie Justin Hewins both went for a ball. Drew won the ball but Hewins dragged him down from behind giving Adelphi a penalty kick. Freshman Jose Castillo took the kick for the Panthers and struck the ball towards the left side of the goal. Hewins tracked the shot all the way and made the save to keep the Rams in the game.
After the penalty kick there was a battle for the ball and the Panthers were called for a foul. But after the foul Franco Ruscetta appeared to argue with the referee and earned his second yellow of the game, which put his team a player down. Adelphi really put on the pressure with the man advantage but could not convert and the game went into overtime.
During the overtime Adelphi kept the pressure on and had some quality chances. But seven minutes into the first overtime Frederick Douglas was given a red card and sent off, which meant that Philadelphia was now playing two men down. Even with a two man disadvantage the Rams were able to force a second overtime. A lot of that had to do with the play of Hewins, who made more then a few saves to keep the Rams in the game.
But just over four minutes into the second overtime Drew struck a cross into the box that was headed into the back of the net by senior Gary Sullivan. It was Sullivan's second goal of the season. Hewins recorded seven saves on the afternoon and senior Tom Cunningham collected two saves and the shut out victory.
Adelphi returns to action next Wednesday, October 8th when they travel to Princeton for a 7:30 pm show down with the Tigers.
