Box Score
Philadelphia, PA -
Two penalty kicks by Adelphi' s Joseph Afful were the difference in this match as Adelphi (7-4-1) handed Drexel (5-7-1) its third consecutive loss in a physical game. Junior Justin Sadler and sophomore Joseph Banks scored for the dinged-up Dragons, while Afful, freshman Ron Forman and Padraig Drew scored for the Panthers.
Adelphi looked dominant and opened scoring in the 23rd minute when Ron Forman pounded a half volley into the goal from 15 yards out, much to the chagrin of the crowd of Dragon's soccer alumni in attendance for alumni day at Vidas Field.
But the Dragons evened the game just a minute later when Sadler flicked a header into the goal off a Dominic Balsamo corner kick. Banks put Drexel in the lead going into halftime when he collided with Adelphi goal-keeper Tom Cunningham at the top of the goal box. The ball deflected off Banks' head and trickled 10 yards into the far corner of the goal. Adelphi physically dominated play in the first half and outshot Drexel 8-6, but went into the half trailing by a goal.
Things started getting ugly for the Dragons in the second half. Sophomore Tim Mochan tugged Joseph Afful's jersey in the goalbox to prevent a break away. Afful knocked in the penalty kick to tie the game at two a piece. Tempers, which had been showing all game, flared in the 70th minute when a questionable sideline call and a light foul called on Kwesi Klass in the goal box sent Assistant Coach Woody Hartman into a frenzy. Hartman was given a red card and Afful polished off his second penalty kick to put Adelphi back on top 3-2. Padraig Drew scored minutes later to seal the game for Adelphi.
Adelphi outshot Drexel 20-10. Cunningham recorded four saves in his seventh victory, Joe Hartman finished with eight saves.
The Panthers travel to Fairfield Wednesday, October 15th, to take on the Stags. Kick-off is set for 7 pm.
