Adelphi Nen's Basketball Tops Queens, 76-59

Garden City, N.Y. - Senior forward Wayne Nelson scored 23 points to lead the Adelphi University men's basketball team to a 76-59 victory over visiting Queens College. The Panthers snap a three-game losing streak. Adelphi improves to 4-5 on the season and 4-3 in the NYCAC. The Knights fall to 6-4 on the season and 4-3 in the NYCAC.

The Panthers had a balanced scoring attack led by senior forward Wayne Nelson with 23 points, junior guard Thomas McCormack with 13 points and five steals, senior guard Tony Kellman with 11 points and freshman forward Jamaal Wagner with a season-high 10 points.

Adelphi jumped out to the early 9-1 lead in the first half with senior Wayne Nelson totaling seven of those points. The Knights fought back with a strong defensive press and tied the Panthers at the 13:01 mark, 14-14. A lay-up made by freshman Shaun Bertin gave Queens the 16-14 lead with 12:23 remaining in the half. Consecutive baskets made by Adelphi freshman Jamaal Wagner gave the Panthers a 19-16 lead. The Panthers never looked back and ended the half with a 41-24 advantage.

The strong play by the Panthers continued into the second half with Adelphi scoring the first five points. Both teams finished the second half scoring 35 points to give the final score of 76-59.

The Panthers finished the game shooting 50 percent from the field while Queens shot 39.9 percent. Adelphi also led in three point field goal percentage shooting 44.4 from the arc. The Knights finished the game shooting 23.1 from the three-point line.

Adelphi returns to action on Saturday, January 11, traveling to conference rival St. Thomas Aquinas. Tip-off is at 3:30 p.m.
