Sophomore guard Melanie Mangone poured in a career-best 27 points to lead the Adelphi University women's basketball team to a 77-71 overtime win over Queens College, Wednesday night. The Panthers snap a three-game losing streak, improving to 5-5 on the season and 4-3 in the NYCAC. The Lady Knights drop to 4-6 overall and 3-4 in the NYCAC.
Junior Jaime Douglas added 18 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Freshman Carlyshia Hurdle added eight points and six boards.
Seven minutes into the first half, Adelphi opened up a comfortable seven point lead, 15-8. Queens responded on an 18-4 to lead by nine points with 4:06 remaining in the half. The Panthers ended the half on a 9-4 run to close to within six points, 32-28.
Adelphi came out strong in the second half, chipping away at the Queens' lead. Graduate forward Kylee Wilson, who had a career-high seven points, hit a three-pointer at 15:05 to bring the Panthers to within one, 36-35. Back-to-back three-point field goals by Mangone spurred a 17-7 run and with 10:00 remaining in the contest, Adelphi led, 52-43. The Lady Knights rallied back, scoring the next seven points to tie the game, 50-50. The Lady Knights pulled away for a three-point advantage with :30 seconds remaining. Junior Kerri Kirschbaum hit the tre, with :24 seconds on the clock, to tie the game, 61-61. Back-to-back Panther fouls saw Queens take the lead, 61-63 and with six seconds on the clock, Mangone hit the buzzer beater from just inside the arc to take the game into overtime, 63-63.
In overtime, with the score tied at 68-68, the Panthers outscored the Lady Knights, 9-3 in the final 2:30 minutes of the game to capture the win, 77-71.
Junior guard Erin Dollard paced the Lady Knights with 17 points and junior center Kerri Graham added 10 points.
Adelphi returns to action on Saturday, January 11, traveling to St. Thomas Aquinas. Tip-off is at 1:00 p.m.
