Women Fall Short At Philadelphia, 76-57

Philadelphia, Penn. - The Adelphi University women's basketball team dropped its third straight contest, falling to host Philadelphia University, 76-57, Saturday afternoon. The Panthers fall to 4-5 overall and 3-3 in the NYCAC, while the Lady Rams improve to 6-2 on the season, 4-2 in the conference.

Freshman Carlyshia Hurdle led the Panthers with 17 points, along with six rebounds. Junior Jaime Douglas had 13 points and three rebounds.

Both teams got off to a slow start as Adelphi trailed by just one point, 14-15, with 8:48 on the clock. However, the Panthers offense struggled, as the team was 0-12 from beyond the arc in the first half. The Lady Rams defense held Adelphi scoreless for the next six minutes of play, going on a 23-5 run to finish the half, 38-19. On the half, the Lady Rams shot 48.3 percent from the field to the Panthers' 26.7 percent.

Adelphi jumped out to a quick start in the second half, going on a 6-2 run in the first three minutes of play. Although the Panthers improved to 40.5 percent from the field, they were never able to close the gap. Both teams scored 38 points in the second half as the Lady Rams took the contest, 76-57.

Adelphi finished the game 34.3 percent from the field as Philadelphia shot 48.2 percent. The Lady Rams also dominated the boards, outrebounding the Panthers, 51-33.

Sophomore forward Samara Speakes led the Philadelphia with a game-high 21 points and 10 rebounds. Junior guard Jean-Maire Reilly added 17 points.

Adelphi returns to action next Wednesday, January 8th, hosting Queens College at 5:30 p.m.
