Men's Basketball Knocks Off C.W. Post, 84-76

Garden City, N.Y. - Junior Thomas McCormack poured in a game-high 20 points, including 7-of-9 from the field, to lead the Adelphi Panthers to an upset win over conference rival C.W. Post, 86-74. Adelphi improves to 9-7 overall and 8-5 in the NYCAC. The Pioneers, ranked No. 2 in the region and first in the conference, drop to 12-5 overall and 12-3 in the NYCAC.

Senior Wayne Nelson had 14 points and seven rebounds, while senior Sherman Whittenburg added 11 points. Senior Tony Kellman, who needed just seven points to reach the 1000th career point mark, hit a three-pointer late in the second half to notch nine points in the game.

With fresh memories of a 65-62 double overtime loss at Post earlier this season, Adelphi jumped out to an early lead, shooting 50 percent in the first half. The Pioneers would not go quietly, hitting 16 of 28, or 57.1 percent from the field. The Panthers hit 6-of-11 from three-point range to hold a 43-38 lead going into the half.

In a heated contest which saw six lead changes and eight ties in the second half, the game was tied for the final time, 63-63, after a steal and basket by McCormack with 7:30 remaining. This sparked a 9-5 Panther run as Adelphi opened up a six point lead with 3:35 on the clock. The Panthers held on for the win, 84-76.

On the game, Adelphi shot 48.2 percent from the field, compared with Post's 51.9 percent. The panthers shot a sizzling 52.4 percent from three-point range, connecting on 11-of-21 attempts.

The Pioneers were led by Gerry McNair with 17 points and five rebounds. Nevelle Storer had 12 points along with a team-high seven boards.

Kellman becomes the 29th player in Adelphi history to collect 1,000 career points. His total now stands at 1002 and counting.

Adelphi returns to action on Saturday, traveling to Dowling College. Tip off is slated for 3:30 p.m.
