Junior Thomas McCormack led Adelphi with a career-high 23 points, including 13-of-13 from the free throw line, seven rebounds and seven assists to lead the Panthers to a 86-81 overtime win over the Mercy College Flyers, Saturday afternoon at Westchester Community College. Adelphi has now won its last five games and improves to 8-5 overall and 7-3 in the NYCAC. Mercy drops to 3-9 overall and 3-7 in the NYCAC.
In all, three players scored 20+ points, with seniors Wayne Nelson and Tony Kellman collecting 22 points and 20 points, respectively. Nelson also pulled down a team-high nine boards.
The Panthers found themselves trailing by three points at the end of the first half, 27-30. Adelphi shot just 25.9 percent from the field, just 7-of-27 from the field, as Mercy faired slightly better with 37.9 percent.
The Panthers rallied back in the second half, outscoring the Flyers 47-44 to go into overtime. Adelphi pulled away on a 12-7 run to take the game, 86-81.
On the contest, Adelphi shot a blazing 90.9 percent from the free throw line, including 17-of-17 in the second half and 4-of-4 in overtime.
The Flyers were led by Michael Beaton with 20 points and eight rebounds. Alwyn Waldron notched a game-high 15 rebounds to go along with 14 points.
Adelphi continues its four-game road stand on Tuesday, traveling to the University of New Haven. Tip off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
