The Adelphi University men's basketball team extended its win streak to four with a 75-68 win over host Molloy College, Thursday night. The Panthers improve to 7-5 overall and 6-3 in the NYCAC. The Lions fall to 6-6, and 4-5 in the NYCAC.
Senior Wayne Nelson led the Panthers with 22 points, followed by junior Dwayne Thompson with 13 points.
The Panthers jumped out to an early lead, opening up a 14-6 advantage within the first eight minutes of the contest. The Lions erased the Panther lead, outscoring Adelphi 14-5, to close to within one, 20-19, with 5:05 remaining. Thompson poured in eight of the Panthers final 15 points to give Adelphi a 35-25 cushion going into intermission.
The second half proved to be more of a challenge as the Panthers racked up eight personal fouls in the first 4:30 minutes. This allowed the Lions close to the deficit to four points, 40-36, at the 14:34 mark. The game remained close, as both teams exchanged baskets. Molloy closed to within two points, 55-53, with seven minutes to go, but never surpassed Adelphi. The Panthers realized its largest lead of the half, 57-66, after two free throws from junior Juma Allen, who was seven-for-10 from the line. In fact, six of the last nine Adelphi points, were from the charity stripe as AU held on for the win, 75-68.
Molloy was led by Moises Garcia with 15 points and Paul Cordasco with 14 points.
Adelphi has won its last six meetings with Molloy, improving its all-time series record to 23-4.
The Panthers are back in action this Saturday, traveling to Mercy College. Scheduled start time is 2:00 p.m.
