Sophomore Melanie Mangone poured in 17 of her game-high 24 points in the second half to lead the Adelphi University women's basketball team to a 78-70 conference win over host Molloy College, Thursday night. The Panthers improve to 7-6 overall and 6-4 in the NYCAC. The Lady Lions fall to 4-8 on the season and 4-6 in the NYCAC.
Sophomore Jesse Dlabola registered 14 points, five assists and three steals, while junior Jaime Douglas chipped in 10 points and six rebounds.
The first half saw evenly matched teams, and the game would tie three times through the first17 minutes. A basket by senior Brianne MacArthur with 3:03 on the clock sparked a 9-0 Panther run, which allowed Adelphi to lead, 42-36, going into the intermission. The Lady Lions outshot the Panthers 52 percent to 38.5 percent, however Adelphi cleared 10 of 11 from the free throw line to hold the six point advantage.
Just two minutes into the second half, Molloy closed to within two points, 42-40, however this is the closest they would get. Over the next eight minutes, Adelphi opened a comfortable 15 point lead outscoring Molloy, 22-12, capped by a three-pointer by Mangone, one of four on the night. The Lady Lions managed to chip away the lead to seven, 71-64, with 3:45 remaining, but the Panthers would hold on for the win, 76-68.
The Lady Lions were led by Rose Bruno with 17 points and six rebounds.
This win is retribution for the Panthers, who last year saw their 21-game win streak snapped a 72-85 loss at Molloy on February 7, 2001. Adelphi now leads its all-time series against Molloy, 38-10.
Adelphi continues its four game road trip, traveling to Mercy College on Saturday, January 18. Tip-off is slated for 4:30 p.m.
