The Adelphi University women's team dropped a close 68-64 contest on the road to St. Thomas Aquinas, Saturday afternoon. Sophomore Melanie Mangone tallied 15 points, including 6-for-6 from the free-point line, to lead the Panthers for the second time in as many games. With the loss, Adelphi drops to 5-6 on the season and 4-4 in the NYCAC.
Junior Jaime Douglas also scored in double figures, collecting 14 points and six rebounds. Freshman Meranne Whitney pulled down a team-high seven boards to go along with eight points.
The Panthers came out strong, shooting 47.8 percent in the first half to hold a 33-31 advantage going into intermission. The Lady Spartans rallied back in the second half, shooting 61.9 percent from the field to outscore the Panthers, 37-31, to claim the four-point victory.
On the contest, Adelphi outrebounded STAC, 36-29, yet struggled from the charity stripe, connecting on just 13 of 21, for 61.9 percent from the line.
The Lady Spartans were led by Josephine Alohan with 26 points, including 5-for-9 from beyond the arc, along with eight rebounds.
Adelphi returns to action on Tuesday, January 14, hosting undefeated conference foe Southampton at 7:30 p.m.
