The Adelphi University men's soccer team suffered a heartbreaking double overtime loss to conference foe Hartwick College, 2-1, Saturday afternoon at Stiles Field. The Hawks improve to 5-3-1 overall and 2-0 in the Atlantic Soccer Conference (ASC), while the Panthers drop to 2-7 overall, 0-1 in the conference.
Junior Rob Catana (Calgary, Canada) put the Hawks on the board in the 39th minute off a deflection and past Adelphi goalkeeper Igor Yatsenko (Brooklyn, N.Y.) to take the lead, 1-0.
Adelphi would answer early in the second half as junior Marlon McEachnie (Trinidad, West Indies) tied the game, 1-1, off a cross from senior Anders Salomonsson (Viken, Sweden).
At the end of regulation, the scored remained tied at 1-1. After trading shots throughout most of overtime, a tie seemed inevitable. Then with :34 seconds remaining in the second overtime, Hartwick's Colin Burns (Kilwinning, Scotland) scored the game-winner from 24 yards out.
On the contest, Hartwick outshot Adelphi 22-6, picking up eight corner kicks to the Panthers one.
Yatsenko recorded 10 saves for Adelphi and Randall Moate collected two.
Adelphi returns to conference action next Saturday, traveling to Philadelphia University. Kickoff is at 2:30 p.m.
