The Adelphi University men's basketball team fell to C.W. Post, 65-62, in a double-overtime thriller Tuesday night at the Pratt Center. The loss ends the Panthers eight game win streak against the Pioneers as Adelphi falls to 2-2 on the season and 1-1 in the NYCAC. The Pioneers improve to 2-0, 2-0 in the NYCAC.
Senior Wayne Nelson led Adelphi with 18 points. Junior Thomas McCormack had 13 points, going 4-for-6 from the field. Senior Tony Kellman and junior Dwayne Thompson each added 11 points.
In a very physical contest which saw 52 personal fouls, neither team shot better than 31 percent from the field in the first half. Adelphi was just 3-for-12 from beyond the arc, while C.W. Post was 0-for-2. Adelphi led at the half, 23-18.
The Pioneers improved their shooting percentage in the second half, outscoring the Panthers 31-26. Adelphi trailed Post, 47-41, with just over five minutes remaining in regulation. Junior Juma Allen scored four of his five points over the next two minutes to bring Adelphi to within three, 46-49. McCormack hit the three-pointer, one of three in the game, with a minute remaining, 49-49, sending to send the game into overtime.
Spurred by another three-point field goal from McCormack, the Panthers opened a 52-49 lead, but the Pioneers responded, tying the game again, 55-55. Both teams continued to battle back and forth in the second overtime, but the Pioneers managed to hold on for the win, 65-62.
Gerry McNair had 19 points and eight rebounds to lead C.W. Post. Justin Cole added 14 points along with six rebounds.
On the game, while neither team shot better than 34 percent, C.W. Post was strong on the boards, outrebounding Adelphi, 54-43.
The last Pioneer win against the Panthers was on January 16, 1999, as Post topped AU, 55-47.
Adelphi returns to action on Thursday, December 5, hosting Dowling College at 7:30 p.m.
