Women's Basketball Handed First Loss of Season to C.W. Post, 66-62

Brookville, N.Y. - The Adelphi University women's basketball team suffered its first loss of the 2003 campaign, dropping a 66-62 decision to conference foe C.W. Post on Tuesday evening. The Panthers fall to 2-1 overall and 1-1 in the NYCAC, while the Pioneers improve to 1-1 overall and 1-1 in the NYCAC.

Sophomore Courtney Carpenter collected a game-high 16 points and 11 rebounds for Adelphi. Freshman Carlyshia Hurdle recorded a career-high 16 points along with six rebounds and two blocks, while junior Jamie Douglas had 13 points along with eight rebounds.

The game got off to a slow start with Adelphi trailing 14-15 with ten minutes remaining in the first half. The Pioneers would go on a 15-6 run in the last ten minutes of play to lead 32-20 at the half. On the half, C.W. Post shot 45 percent from the field, while Adelphi was held to just under 30 percent.

Adelphi responded in the second half, outscoring C.W. Post, 24-9, to trail by three, 44-41, with 10:39 remaining. Hurdle gave the Panthers the lead, 49-48, on a jumper with seven minutes on the clock. Both teams battled back and forth with the Pioneers leading by three points with less than a minute on the clock. The Panthers had a chance to tie the game but missed a three-pointer with :20 seconds remaining. C.W. Post held on for the win, 66-62.

The Pioneers were led by Thalia Jackson with 14 points and eight assists. Cherelle Payne added 13 points along with 10 rebounds.

Adelphi returns to action on Thursday, December 5, hosting Dowling College at 5:30 p.m.
